Red Dots on Roof of Mouth

While some mouth sores and spots do appear outside the mouth like around the chin and lips, others can occur inside such as the gums, lips, tongue, and roof of mouth. Red dots occurring on the roof of a mouth may be caused by different things ranging from cold to petechiae. Causes of red dots on roof of mouth and related symptoms

The causes of red dots on the roof of mouth are many. These red dots can be caused by irritated salivary gland especially in smokers though not always. Oral candidiasis may also manifest in this way. Candidiasis is usually an infection caused by a different microbe such as fungi or yeast and occurs in moist, warm parts of body and its symptoms are such as itching, redness, and discomfort.

 

Candidiasis, also known as moniliasis or oral thrush could show presence of red spots in palate. It is a fungal infection, which presents symptoms such as white and cream-like patches on mouth. The condition can be painful and may cause a patient to experience bad breath or difficult in swallowing.

 

Another condition that could cause these dots is a condition known as petechiae. Patechiae occurs when the small vessels of blood under the skin rapture. Patechiae can be caused by infections, bleeding disorders, and excess pressure put on some blood capillaries. The symptoms of patechiae are such as tiny purplish dots on surface of the skin.

 

Tonsillitis and cold could also show signs of red dots appearing on the roof of mouth or palate. Oral herpes or cold sores are also known to cause red spots on palate. These sores may be caused by a virus known as simplex virus type 1 or HSV-1. This virus causes small painful blisters that occur on skin around mouth, on gums, and lips.

 

Oral herpes may be transmitted from one person to another through getting in contact with a person who has the virus. For example, if you get in contact with the saliva of an individual who has HSV-1 virus, you are likely to contract the disease. Other ways HSV-1 could be contracted is by sharing utensils or kissing. Although herpes simplex virus type-1 could be passed from the genitals to mouth, it is not a sexually transmitted infection.

 

People who indulge in oral sex could risk contracting this virus from their partners. When the dots or spots occurring in your mouth precede white or grey ulcer, it may be a sign of oral herpes. Ulcers may take some time to develop than the red spots meaning you need to wait for a number of days before you see if ulcer develops in the middle of the red spots.

 

Injuries to the palate or roof of mouth may also cause reddish spots or dots. When you jape your mouth with something that is hard such as a pretzel, it might cause an injury, which leads to development of a rash or lesions on the mouth. Those lesions appear like white spots or lacelike.

 

An injury to the tiny blood vessels on the palate could show the reddish dots. However, an injury to the roof of mouth is not always a good explanation of red spots on roof of mouth though it could actually cause that sign. Cold sores also at times referred to as fever blisters are usually a collection of painful fluid filled blisters.

Lichen planes, a disorder that manifests in form of some chronic but itchy inflammatory rash or lesions inside the mouth or on skin could also show red dots. The lesions may appear lacelike or white spots. Though not a contagious disease, it has no cure and much of treatment is aimed at relieving the pain and secondary infection.

 

Thinning of the mouth lining may also cause red dots on palate. When lining in mouth becomes thin, the tiny blood vessels or capillaries get closer to surface. This can make the palate to appear dotted with red spots. Since the lesion areas also known as erythroplakia are raised on surface, they tend to bleed easily when scraped.

 

Erythroplakia may a times precede the develop of cancer, ergo; you should seek medical attention fast. Erythroplakia causes red patches on the mouth floor and the gums but the patches could also affect the roof of mouth. The cause of this condition, erythroplakia is unknown but is often linked to alcohol and smoking as well as chronic irritation and poor nutrition.

 

It is a common sign seen in people who are in precancerous stage of cancer after being observed with use of a biopsy. An individual who has red lesions and they do not seem to heal in a week or so, he or she should consider being evaluated by a doctor.

 

Treatment

Consult a medical doctor when you have red spots in mouth so that you are examined of the cause. The treatment of red spots on roof of mouth is based on the cause. If there is pain or an infection, antibiotics may be used.
